The problem
Sound familiar?
Each of these has a cause that an audit can find before anything is changed.
- You advertise to the EEA or UK and aren’t sure your tags send consent signals.
- Tags fire before the visitor answers the cookie banner.
- The banner saves the choice, but Google tags never receive an update.
- GA4 or Google Ads numbers changed after a banner was added and nobody knows why.
- Nobody can say whether the site runs Basic or Advanced consent mode.
The fix
What gets done
The same order every time: evidence first, then changes, then a handover your team can keep.
Audit
Banner or CMP, GTM container and the consent state of every tag checked in Tag Assistant.
Plan
Basic or Advanced mode, banner categories mapped to the four consent types, regions.
Setup
Denied defaults before any tag, banner updates, consent checks on Google and non-Google tags.
Test and hand over
Accept, reject and next-page scenarios checked in Tag Assistant and GA4 DebugView, then documented.
You receive
- Consent map: banner categories to ad_storage, analytics_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization
- Consent settings on every tag in your container
- Test record for accept, reject and returning visitors
- Written handover your team can maintain
How long: Typically 2–5 working days after access, depending on your banner or CMP. An estimate, not a guarantee.

FAQ
Before you ask.
Something else? Ask in the form.
Basic or Advanced consent mode?
Basic sends nothing to Google before consent; Advanced sends cookieless pings while consent is denied. The plan explains both for your case; the choice is yours and your legal advisor’s.
Do I need a paid CMP?
Not necessarily. You need a banner that stores the choice and sends updates; Google recommends a CMP that integrates with Tag Manager.
Is this legal advice?
No. The work is the technical setup; your privacy policy and legal basis remain your responsibility.
Does it cover Meta and other tags?
Yes. Tags without built-in consent checks get Tag Manager’s additional consent checks.
How long does it take?
Typically 2–5 working days after access.
